Attention must be paid: Afghanistan - with any luck, the next El Salvador, according to the Dark Lord of the Sith - is currently having something resembling elections. What kind exactly is unclear.
There seems to be some acknowledgement in the mainstream media that the process is more than a little hinky. I can't help but wonder, though, if there is a measure of condescension applied in this case, as if the towelheads need to have their Uncle Sam hold their hand through the first couple dozen or so runs, which don't really count since we runnin' things no how. Says the NY Times:
Two of 15 candidates who had said they wanted the election redone because of alleged irregularities, most notably problems with indelible ink that had been meant to prevent multiple votes, indicated they would accept the results of an independent investigation that officials announced today. Behind-the-scenes negotiations were being held with others to ensure a similar compromise.
Behind the scenes, indeed.
At any rate, the irrepressible and always indispensable Rahul Mahajan is covering the demo elections. Go see, here first, then here.
