do it
For the one or one of you who care, there will be light posting this week and some of the next, as I'll be working on another piece about the New Freedom Comission's so-called recommendations to President Bush for a national mental health screen 'em-and-dope-em effort, probably starting in the public schools (that, and I'm all verklempt or faklempt or whatever over this. Holy regeneration, Batman...).
I'll be sure to post links and any off-the-cuff observations when it goes up, probably some time in the next two weeks. In the meantime, here's a little taste:
During his tenure as Texas governor, George W. Bush oversaw the implementation of state-run programs that streamlined the testing and drug treatment of both adults and children suffering from mental health issues.
As President, Bush would like to begin engineering a similar, nationally administered program, one that would include the public school population.
Grassroots mental health proponents, anti-psych drug advocates, and government whistleblower accuse the proposed program of being a "Trojan Horse" for Big Pharma, and even a Republican congressman from Texas is asking fellow lawmakers for more oversight to protect potential participants, namely kids.
Though a number of states have or are in the process of establishing similar programs, those curious to know just what a vast, government-run plan to dispense psychiatric drugs to schoolchildren might look like - and what both backers and critics of such a program might say about it - may want to start in Bush’s adopted home state of Texas.
Let me also take a moment to encourage all one of you to please take a look at the New Standard's site and think about donating a little cash. I think they still have premiums to spur your generosity, and apparently the one and only Noam Chomsky donated a nice sum too, so you'd be in excellent company. They stand tall and kick much ass, considering their budget and the kind of riff-raff they have writing for them.
See youse around...
