we writes letters
Mr. Carroll:
I am writing this morning to note an error in an "On-Point" column which ran on August 9, 2006.
In this August 9 opinon piece, you allued to an appearance former Colorado Attorney General and Bush Administration Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton made before the House Resources Committee in 2003, where she stated that drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) would "produce nearly 1.4 million barrels of oil" each day.
However, Ms. Norton's dated assertion does not jibe with the most recent reports by the federal government's Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA). In February of this year, the EIA stated that if oil production had begun in ANWR in 2005, daily oil production would peak at around 800,000 barrels a day, and only then in the year 2024.
I think you would agree that living in a state with a wealth of natural resources like Colorado, it is important we pay close attention and try to get the numbers right on a consitent basis, lest we make policy errors we might come to regret.
As an editorial writer for perhaps the most widely read newspaper in the state, I do hope you find time and space to print a correction for your many readers.
Many thanks for your prompt attention to this matter.
