still doomed?
If wishes were like death meteors...

The amount of political capital and energy expended on trying to manuever past the American Taliban, whisk by the security moms, and convince media personalities that politicians other than Republicans are worth a second look this fall may, in fact, be Karl Rove's last, best, cheap shot: that eight years of insanity, war, stupefying corruption, and the wholesale sacrifice of our most time-honored civil liberties just might've poisoned the body politic so that the Democratic Party that picks up the gavel this next coupla will be something cowed, crippled and sick - something dying and horrible on the inside, like Jeff Goldblum in the Cronenberg Fly.
Says Silverstein:
Of course, if the Democrats do win the House, it will be fun to watch Waxman issuing subpoenas and Conyers raising the issue of Bush's impeachment. But for those who want to see real changes in the way that Congress operates, a Democratic victory does not provide much cause to hope.
And can we count on these same Dems to block a possible attack on Iran? Yes? No? Maybe so? Or we will be herded into the peanut gallery, while they stand with the Prez in this most difficult of times, blah blah?
Yes, the Dems will get the Lab's vote. Yes, most are pro-science, meekly pro-environment, and somewhat less comfortable about bending over for Big Pharma, Big Finance, and Big Whatever, and will ratchet back a few of the Bush Administration's most onerous domestic policies; yes yes yes to all of those things. We heartily agree. But remember, though the sun is setting on the Reign of Bush, there's a lot more than just his ugly brood that made this torture chamber possible. Come November 8, we just may end up with Bush Democrats.
