i'm sending a letter i'll send it right to you
John Hess, R.I.P.
I got turned onto Hess after seeing him on the Counterpunch site, and though I haven't had the opportunity to check out his books yet, I can honestly say I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I did get a chance to read.
From what I understand, Hess, like Jimmy Breslin and recently departed Nation contributor Jack Newfield, formed a core of New York journalists who were more like Howard Hawks' idealized figments than the bank tellers and mini-van dads who infest today's daily paper.
More, and of course much better, from Alexander Cockburn.
