can't do nuttin for you man
From this morning's Democracy Now:
no water, sick, no heat, call somebody for help
Jesus.
And on that note, check out this surprisingly harsh editorial in this morning's NYT.
I don't want to turn this week's posts into one long Bush Bash, but the sheer disconnect the administration's showing in regards to this catastrophe is astounding. It's like Dickens in the real.
It's been written that over the last twenty or so years, the model based on the "Washington Consensus" that the IMF and World Bank employed abroad - gutting social programs, loosening the social contract and the cutting of the safety net, opening the public sector up for private gain - was subtly being employed at home. Bush's nonchalance, his calls for citizen "responsibility" to deal with this, is merely the personalization of that effort, and the fantastic lack of preparation the government at every level has shown in response to this tragedy, the systemic manifestation (Indeed, I'm reminded of one example of this process - thank you too, Dems - by this little gem back in 2001 from Saint Ralph).
But hey, "everything [will] work out in the end," right? Sure. Thing.
