watching the detectives
Since the mid '90s, even after I discovered girls and they discovered me back, and suddenly obssessing over the sports page and ESPN seemed a little stale and more than a little homoerotic for my budding aesthetic, each fall I've pledged to hunker down and watch the football: it is - was - after all, The Good Doctor's game, and I thought that as a good and proper devotee I should be studying the slate of Sunday afternoon match-ups. Perhaps, I reasoned, I'd find whatever sort of poetry he managed to cull from all that sound and noise.
Alas, the only sort of elegance I find sportsways nowadays is in the NBA. I simply don't have the patience for football, and in most cases the only time it's on is when I need some background while I do homework.
Nevertheless, I put on the first Sunday, if only for a quarter or two. However, I wasn't in town to catch a single season opener. But with the goose stepping/hoedown in D.C. and the promise of men in tights hitting each other, I can only imagine Teevee Land was Bullshit City this September 11.
Whaaa? you ask, rubbing your lovely peepers - football und patriotism? Oh yes, Frau and Herr reader. As the bodies continue to pile up down south - and thankfully, it seems the carnage from Katrina and the subsequent Bureaucratic Fuck Up of Unusual Size may not be nearly as large as it was originally assumed - and the meat continues to be ground in Democracy Land, we can all be certain the NFL and even my beloved NBA - especially since each has a franchise in what was NOLA - will probably be hijacked for the cheapest of propaganda, if recent history is any indication: though the song sung a year or two back will be different this time out, the same four bars will still be there - EVERYTHING IS A-O-FUCKING-KAY, if you love sports, you love America and people who love America watch sports and generally don't ask hard questions and look Michael Chertoff and Dick Cheney love the NFL where-moments-are-made and NBA cos-it's-fantastic too, so shut up, shut up and be happy.
